my philosophy on breeding maine coons

The first Maine Coon I ever met was in Waterville, Maine in the early 1970s. This large docile girl was a beautiful, treasured family pet. Her greatest challenge in life seemed to be finding the sunniest windowsill to lay on, moving from one windowsill to the next as the day waned on. A highly social cat, she would eagerly play with anyone who would stop to visit her, and she greeted the children at the door when they came home from school with chirps and head-butts.

Many years later I shared my home for almost 14 years with Bear. He was a domestic longhair solid blue fantastical cat. Several months after he traveled to  the Rainbow Bridge, I decided to research the Maine Coon Breed.

Maine Coon Cats are a very special breed of cat. They are desired due to many traits:

  • A loving nature
  • A fabulous purrsonality
  • “Gentle Giants”
  • A “Tail with a cat attached”
  • America’s native Long-haired Breed
which is surrounded by Legend and Mystery

I strive to reach for the Maine Coon appearance standards as described by CFA and TICA, maintaining health, good size, and a pleasant temperament as priorities.

  • Cumbrescoons is inspected annually for:
    CFA Cattery of Excellence &
    TICA Outstanding Cattery
  • Kittens are raised "underfoot" and socialized as family members in a warm and loving home.
  • Health Guarantee provided. I test all my cats for potential health issues, such as Hip Dysplasia and HCM (hypercardiomyopathy) I am very happy to continue as a cattery that is free of Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus.
  • Kittens are kept here until 12 to 16 weeks of age.
  • I ask for a $150.00 non-refundable deposit to reserve a kitten. This helps to cover my expenses as I begin the vetting process.
  • Kitten prices start at $700.00.
  • Shipping of kittens is possible, circumstances permitting.
  • As I am very selective in placing the right kitten(s) in the right home, anyone interested in the purchase of a kitten will be asked to submit an application.
  • I welcome continued open communications with all my "kitten families" as I love to hear how everyone is doing, and answering any questions along the way.
  • Cumbrescoons is a closed cattery, I do not take in studs or females for breeding purposes only.
  • Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
